Be nice to your skin and bones, because they might just
save your heart or
grey matter. Adult stem cells are showing impressive results in helping heart attack, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's patients recover.
Dr Helmut Drexler, of the Medical University of Hannover in Germany, used adult stem cells from bone marrow of heart-attack patients to see if they could improve heart function .
They Did!
"Our results lend support to the concept that bone-marrow cells can be used to enhance functional recovery in patients," he said in a report in The Lancet medical journal.
Sixty patients were treated either with stem cells taken from their own bone marrow, or with the best conventional treatment.
After six months, it was found the hearts of those who received the stem cell transplants were working better.
Stem cells are master cells that can develop into specialized cells. Adult Stem Cells are derived from the patient's own body and overcome the problem of being rejected by the patient's immune system. They also avoid the ugly issue of harvesting babies for stem cells.
It's ethical, and it works.
Although much more research is needed, scientists have already carried out an experiment in which adult stem cells from skin were transformed into precursors of nerve cells. This has raised the possibility of making brain cells from a patient's own skin.
So if you have great skin but dogey brain cells then...
